3 Things To Know Before Buying Replacement Windows

Replacement windows are a great way to enhance your home’s look at cheaper prices. But before you make any investment, you must do your home-work properly and be sure to make an important decision. Here are some things you must know before purchasing Home Windows in Arlington:

#1. The difference between replacement windows and retrofit windows

A window that replaces any existing window is called a replacement window. You can do it by using a “retro-fit” window or a “new construction” window.

  • New Construction – If you’re planning to re-stucco soon, installing new construction windows is your best option.
  • Retro-fit – If re-stucco of your house is not your plan in the coming months and your budget is a constraint, it’s better to go for retro-fit windows.

#2. What type of windows do you have?

Your decision varies on what type of windows you have at your home – wooden or metal.

  •     Metal Windows – Typically, metal windows are replaced using a retro-fit window that has an exterior flange that will conceal your old window frame from the outside.
  •       Wood windows Typically, wood windows will be replaced using a retro-fit window that has a sill (bottom) that is designed to accommodate the slope of the old wood window sill. The contractor will remove either the interior or the exterior stops of the old windows, remove the sash (moving parts that hold the glass) and leave the perimeter frame in place. Your new window will be installed in the old perimeter frame.

#3. What type of frame do you want?

Frames are available in three different materials:

  •          Wood – You can choose wooden frames with or without a low-maintenance exterior cladding. If you are remodeling your old home and want new windows as similar to the original windows, you may want to choose windows without exterior cladding.
  •       Vinyl – Vinyl windows are the most popular choice for window replacement. They don’t need any maintenance, insulate well, and less expensive. These smooth operating windows have some downside too. They are only available in white, tan and vinyl, and can’t be painted.
  •      Aluminum – Aluminum windows have poor insulation qualities if they’re single glazed. Replacing your old Aluminum windows with dual glazed Aluminum windows will provide a noticeable improvement in insulation.
  •       Fiberglass – They insulate well, and are available in different variants. You can paint them easily. However, these windows have one downside i.e., they’re quite expensive

The most important thing you need to consider is to choose the company you feel confident. Don’t forget to check reviews before finalizing any contractor for windows installation in Arlington.
