How To Install A Window?

When it's time to replace old windows in your current space or install new windows in a new home, simple steps and a few precautions will help you get the job done.
Here is a guide that can help you install a window on your own.

Measure openings and determine your window needs – Take a measurement tape and measure the pocket opening of your window.
.Start by measuring inside the existing frame, including the height in the left & right sides and the middle.
.Now measure the width at the top, bottom, and center of the window frame.
.Note down the measurements and use them to buy your new window. Ensure to buy your new window about ¾ inches smaller than your open window.
.The next step is to remove the existing window. Use painter’s tape to prevent glass shards from falling while removing the window.

Prep for installing a new window – Once your old window is down, it’s time to fix the frame.
.Check the window jamb and the window stop for structural damage. Replace if damaged.
.Make sure the window is plumb and level and adjust the shims if necessary. You can also hire window repair contractors to fix the issue.

Set and level the window – Once the frame damages are fixed, it’s time to set and level the new window.
.Set the window into the opening and push the brick mold or nailing fin tight against the sheathing.
.Check to see how much adjustment is required to level the window unit.

Double-check windows and pre-drill holes – Measure the window diagonally. If measurements are equal, the window is square, otherwise, adjust the shims until measurements are not equal.
. If the window has a nailing fin, and drive nails through it into the framing.
. If the window has a brick mold, pre-drill holes in it and drives 16d nails through it and into the framing.
. In both cases, start nailing at the corners and space the remaining nails as recommended by the manufacturer.
. Drive all nail heads below the wood surface with a nail set.

Cut siding and apply caulk Take a circular saw and adjust it such that the blade depth is equal to the thickness of the siding.
.Start cutting the siding with the toe of the saw plate on the siding. Make sure to keep the blade and heel of the plate above the surface. Once you fix the sides and apply caulk, it’s time to install your new windows.

Install window – Place the window into the opening, pressing it tightly against the caulk.
Put shims in pre-drilled holes to secure the window.
Drive screws into holes through to the shims.
Check that sashes are even and the window is level.
Add shims where needed.

Trim shims and add insulation – You can trim the shims flush with a utility knife and then snapping off the excess. Fill the gaps between the window jambs and the framing members with loosely packed fiberglass insulation.

Paint and finish the window – Use paint to match your window color with the rest of your house.
